'Why I Run' by Emma

"Why I Run"

I have decided to do a little series featuring some of the runners from the #fitnessgooserunclub. So many have personal stories to tell. I hope you enjoy the first one by @ickle_emmie ❤️

* How has running helped you?

Running has helped me a lot. I suffer from depression & other medical conditions & injuries & running is a great antidepressant & stress reliever. It has also given me a social outlet. I love meeting up with club members & going for a run & coffee. It has also helped to justify my ridiculous nike collection 🤣

* What do you like about training with a club?

Everything! It’s a great place. I’ve always struggled to fit in & never felt like I belonged. The club is filled with amazing people & I finally feel like I’ve found somewhere I belong. Also love being Andrew’s bold student 😂

* Why did you decide to join a club?

I was always involved in sport, but during covid my boxing club & camogie club were closed so I took up running to keep active. I couldn’t get my 5k time under 40mins, so my cousin suggested I try the coach & club she was a part of. (Best decision ever)

* How is running different to other sports you have done?

Unlike any other sport I’ve done, the people are all lovely. There’s no fear of being judged, everyone is encouraging you and cheering you on. One time that really sticks in my mind is my first half marathon. I finished about 45-60mins behind all of my club mates, yet they were all still waiting at the finish line to cheer me on, & Andrew ran the last 500m with me encouraging me over the line. No matter how bad the race feels, the cheer squad at the end always makes you feel like you’re after winning gold.

* Have you made any friends or been inspired by others in the club?

Everyone in the club is amazing. I love when I’m struggling on a Parkrun or race & a goose flies by & gives you a wave and encouragement. Bernard, Gemma & Liz are great for motivating (forcing me) to run when I don’t want to. Biggest inspiration is Andrew and the amazing community he has built and bringing all us mad geese together.
